Aeration Basin Overflow at the Water Pollution Control on March 23-25 due to the Flooding of the Missouri River

Due to the flooding of the Missouri River, Water Pollution Control experienced higher than normal flows from Thursday, March 21, 2019 until Monday, March 25, 2019.

At 1:30 a.m. on March 23, the Aeration Basin could not contain the wastewater pumped, and started to overflow the walls of this basin. This overflowed continued until 1:30 a.m. on March 25.

Water Pollution Control estimated the rate of this overflow was 500 gallons per minute. An estimated 1.4 million gallons overflowed into the existing flood waters during that time.

Water Pollution Control and the City of Leavenworth asked that citizens stay out of the flood waters on 2nd Street until the water was back with the bank of Five-Mile Creek.  Due to the flood, 2nd Street had already been marked off with barricades.
