Commercial Construction

The City of Leavenworth utilizes the 2018 International Building Code and the 2018 Existing Building Code for new commercial, commercial additions, & commercial renovations.

The type of plans and other documents required for commercial construction is dependent on the scope of the project. Please see the links at the bottom of page for more specific information.

Our goal is to complete the application review process as quickly as possible, but the initial review may take up to 3 to 5 weeks depending on the complexity of the project and the volume of applications being reviewed. Commercial projects may be subject to a third party review and subject to plan review fees.

For any question about your upcoming project, please contact us 913-684-0378, or email us at permits@firstcity.org.

Dependent upon proposed use of the building, the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s office may require a code footprint and plan review. The requirements of the code footprint and type of occupancies that the state fire marshal will be involved in are available on their webpage, https://firemarshal.ks.gov/. Also, see the bottom of this page for additional projects that will require approval by the State Fire Marshal's office per the agreement with the Leavenworth Fire Department

Please plan your project with this timeline in mind. You should not start your project until after your application has received approval and a permit has been issued. Once the project begins it, is subject to various inspections and approvals prior to completion of the project.

Inspections are required and performed at various points throughout projects and when the work is completed. Electrical, plumbing, and mechanical trade licenses and permits are required and issued for those doing this type of work in the City, and inspections are performed by the City of Leavenworth staff on a daily basis for both commercial and residential structures. The City of Leavenworth does not require a Business or Contractor license for General Contractors. This link provides additional information for trade licensing and permits. M.E.P. Trade licenses
