Sanitary Sewer Overflow Reported on January 11, 2022 at 600 S. 10th Street
Around 6:01 p.m. on January 11, 2022, Water Pollution Control (WPC) staff was informed that sewage was coming out of the ground. WPC staff responded to the call and determined that a private line was leaking sewage at 610 S. 10th Street and into the storm drain at S. 10th Street and Chestnut. City staff determined this private line had been bored through. The boring company and a plumbing contractor were notified to make repairs. City staff cleaned the area and used containment socks to prevent bypass. Bypass of system ended at 7:00 pm. WPC staff estimated 20 gallons of wastewater was released from the system. City staff will get E. coli samples from the nearest outfall to the creek to determine if it was affected. Until the determination is made, City staff will post creek contamination signs in the area of 701 Lawrence Avenue at the creek. The signs will be removed when it is determined the E. coli levels in the creek are within acceptable limits set by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE). The affected areas will be from the 600 block of S. 10th to the 700 block of Lawrence Avenue.
