Sanitary Sewer Overflow reported Feb. 18, 2017 near Fourth and Spruce streets

On Feb. 18, 2017, Water Pollution Control was notified of a private line sanitary sewer overflow at 2:15 p.m. at 804 S. Fourth Street. A private sewer line had overflowed onto the ground and into a storm drain. An estimated 300 gallons of sewer water was released into the storm drain.
ACTIONS TAKEN: City staff responded and was able to prevent more water from reaching the storm drain. Staff put a sign up to warn any passersby near the open storm drain. The rest of the surrounding storm drains were underground. City staff reported the incident to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
RISK TO PUBLIC: An estimated volume of 300 gallons of sewer water was carried downstream. Residents should avoid the open storm drain for the next five days. The area is between Spruce and Olive streets just east of Fourth Street/Kansas Highway 7.
FURTHER ACTIONS TAKEN – The City confirmed that the private owner of the sewer line would have plumbing staff fix the problem.
WHAT RESIDENTS CAN DO TO HELP: Residents experiencing a sewer problem can call the 24-hour line, 913-682-1090. An on-call crew will come out anytime. Residents are responsible for sewer lines on their property.
