On April 3, 2017, a resident contacted Water Pollution Control that a manhole was overflowing at 8:30 a.m. in the 1400 block of Ottawa Street next to the creek. Excessive rainfall was the likely cause. An estimated 4,500 flowed into the nearby creek.

ACTIONS TAKEN: Water Pollution Control staff responded to the scene and were able to open the line causing the manhole to overflow. The manhole stopped overflowing around 9:30 a.m. "Contaminated creek" signs have been placed around the area.

Risk to public: Residents should avoid the marked area. 

Further actions taken: Staff are testing for E-Coli. Signs will be removed when water samples are back within acceptable limits set by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. 

What residents can do to help: The City would like to thank residents who call in and report overflowing manhole covers. The City has a 24-hour line, 913-682-1090, for residents to report incidents.
