Sanitary Sewer Overflow: 5239 S. 4th Street Transparency Report - January 30, 2023
Around 11:40 a.m. on January 30, 2023, Water Pollution Control (WPC) staff were informed of what appeared to be sewage coming out of the ground at 5239 S. 4th Street. WPC staff responded to the information and deemed the leak to be sewage. City staff called a contractor to come and excavate the area to assess the condition of the City force main. Contractor found a small crack on top of the force main, and they made the necessary repairs. The contractor pumped sewage into the nearest sanitary sewage manhole as they were making the repairs. WPC estimated 7,000 gallons of wastewater was released from the system. The affected area will be from the 5239 S. 4th Street south into the City of Lansing storm drain. This area is an underground creek area. City staff has notified the City of Lansing of the sanitary sewer overflow. City staff has cleaned the area.
