First African American Firefighter Charles "Mick" Fields
Charles "Mick" Fields was the first African American firefighter hired by the Leavenworth Fire Department on January 18, 1960. Charles Fields had a successful career and retired as a Fire Captain on January 18, 1982. He sustained lifelong facial injuries from fighting a fire. He was active in the Independent Baptist Church until his passing in 2012.
