Historic Preservation
The City of Leavenworth prides itself in its distinction as the first city of Kansas. Leavenworth's history is celebrated by active participation in historic renovation projects and by offering incentives to residential and business entities who look to improve the community by restoration efforts. The Community Development and Planning offices coordinate several programs that encourage historic preservation and restoration of Leavenworth's historic buildings.
The City of Leavenworth is a Certified Local Government (CLG) as designated by the Kansas State Historic Preservation Office. As part of this designation, the Leavenworth Preservation Commission was established to inventory, promote, list, record, protect, preserve and enhance places, areas, features or sites within the city that have special significance of an architectural, archeological, cultural or historical sense. The commission advises the City Commission and cooperates with other historical agencies and organizations concerning preservation of the city's historic and cultural heritage.
Any proposed changes to a property listed on the National or State Historic Register, within a registered Historic District, or a Local Landmark requires a state law review and/or issuance of a Certificate of Appropriateness, as required by the Kansas State Preservation Statute (K.S.A. 75-2724). Please contact staff to discuss proposed work and to determine needed level of review.
