S.W.A.T. Team
Special Weapons And Tactics Team - S.W.A.T.
In 1988 and 1989, the Leavenworth Police Department served a series of warrants on high-risk suspects for narcotic violations. During this time, police administration recognized that the department was in need of a better trained and equipped team to handle such events. As such, the Leavenworth S.W.A.T. Team was formed.
In October 1989, the S.W.A.T. Team stood up. The Team began with 13 members specially trained in S.W.A.T. tactics. Through the years, equipment was purchased and training was conducted. The S.W.A.T. Team is now 15 members strong and conducts ongoing monthly training. The S.W.A.T. Team is supported by trained negotiators, K-9, and patrol officers.
Today the S.W.A.T. Team handles:
Hostage/barricade operations;
High-risk search warrant service;
Protection of high-risk persons; and
Any other high-risk situation that may arise.
