Speed limit changes on Fourth Street/Kansas Highway 7
Public Information Office | June 29, 2022
Speed limit changes are coming to Fourth Street, also known as Kansas Highway 7 in the City of Leavenworth. The changes will help improve traffic flow and encourage safer driving, according to results of a professional speed study conducted in 2021. In some areas, the speed limit will increase. The changes are scheduled to take effect beginning in July.
Drivers will begin noticing flagged signs to help them pay attention to the changes in the newly posted speed limits.
The new limits are:
- 40 miles per hour starting 330 feet north of the Eisenhower and U.S. Highway 73 intersection to the south side of the Limit Street intersection.
- 35 miles per hour starting on the south side of the Limit Street intersection and to the south side of the Spruce Street intersection
- 30 miles per hour starting at the south side of the Spruce Street intersection and to the south side of the Choctaw Street intersection.
- 20 miles per hour starting at the south side of the Choctaw Street intersection and to the south side of the Shawnee Street intersection.
- 20 miles per hour starting at the Shawnee Street intersection and to the south side of the Miami Street intersection
- 35 miles per hour starting at the south side of the Miami Street intersection and to the south side of the Metropolitan Street intersection.
In 2021, the City of Leavenworth hired a professional engineering company, Merge Midwest, to conduct a speed study along this major traffic corridor in our community and make recommendations to the City Commission.
