SAMPLE ONE-DAY ITINERARY
LEAVENWORTH, KANSAS

9:00 a.m. – 10:15 a.m. Guided Tour of City of Leavenworth
Tour of the “First City of Kansas,” established in 1854. Points of interest include Fred Harvey’s home, the Carroll Mansion, numerous other historic homes, the renovated 1888 Union Depot and the “Big House,” which is the United States Federal Penitentiary — drive by only!  The cost for the guided city tour will be a $40 flat fee, payable directly to your tour guide.

10:30 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. Guided tour of the Carroll Mansion and gift shop
Take a step back in time. This 1880s Victorian house features elaborate handcrafted woodwork throughout the house, beautiful stained glass windows and elegant antiques from the Victorian era to the early 20th century. Admission is $10 per person, payable to Leavenworth County Historical Society.

Noon – 1:15 p.m. Lunch with the Harvey Girls
Enjoy a catered meal served by ladies dressed as “Harvey Girls” in the Riverfront Community Center, housed in the historic 1888 Union Depot at 123 S, Esplanade Street along the Missouri River. Your menu choice will range from $15.25 to $16.75 per person, including tax and gratuity, payable directly to The City of Leavenworth. We will need a final headcount two weeks prior to your visit. 

1:30 p.m.  Meet your Fort Leavenworth tour guide
The tour guide meeting place and details will be determined within 30 days of the tour date. Your guide will also help you gain security clearance to enter the fort; a U.S. photo ID is required for admission.

1:45 p.m. - 2:45 p.m. Visit the Frontier Army Museum
The museum is home to personal artifacts of General Henry Leavenworth, an exhibit depicting the history of African-American servicemen (the Buffalo Soldiers) and many other intriguing galleries and memorabilia from 1804-1917. The museum has a suggested donation of $4 per person, with a check directed to The Friends of the Frontier Army Museum. The museum is located at 100 Reynolds Ave.

3:00 p.m. - 3:45 p.m. Tour the Buffalo Soldier Monument
Dedicated in 1992 by General Colin Powell, this statue of a soldier on horseback honors units like the 10th U.S. Army Cavalry, made up entirely of African-American men and founded at Fort Leavenworth in 1855. Walk around the Circle of Firsts, monuments dedicated to other military pioneers, and view the newest monument on post, which honors the 6888 Central Postal Directory Battalion. 

3:45 p.m. - 4:45 p.m. Guided tour of Fort Leavenworth
View the oldest active military post west of the Appalachian Mountains on this tour, with an emphasis on the legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers and their impact on the fort. Established in 1827, Fort Leavenworth is known as the "Best Hometown in the Army" as well as "the Army University" for its vast education programming. The cost for the guided Fort tour will be a $40 flat fee, payable directly to your tour guide.

5 p.m. Visit Sis’ Sweets
