Hometown Proud: Murry Dickson

Murry Dickson was born August 21, 1916, in Tracy MO, and moved to Leavenworth as a child and attended Leavenworth High School, graduating in 1935. Dickson pitched for 18 years in the major leagues. He pitched in the World Series three times as a member of the 1943 and 1946 St. Louis Cardinals and the 1958 New York Yankees. Dickson was a 20-game winner in 1951 and was voted to the All-Star team in 1953 as a member of the Pittsburg Pirates.  

He served in the military during World War II, 1942-1946 with the 35th Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop Division.  He landed with the 35th on Omaha Beach in July 1944 and fought across Europe, maneuvering behind enemy lines to locate the Germans.  He was one of the first to see the Dachau Concentration Camp.  After VE Day, he pitched for the 35th Santa Fe Indians in Europe during Occupation Duty.  

Dickson passed away in 1989 at the age of 73 and is interred at Sunset Memory Gardens in Leavenworth, Garden of the Christus, Block 59B, Space 3.
